Visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial on your Outer Banks family vacation.
Pointing skyward in commemoration of the
first successful powered flight by the infamous brothers
Wilbur and Orville Wright, a 60 foot granite
monument stands atop the same 90 foot sand dune
where it all happened. The Wright Brothers National Memorial Visitor Center includes
museum displays and reproductions of century-old
gliders and flying machines. The new Centennial
Pavilion includes exhibits by NASA, the Outer
Banks Historical Society and the state of North
Carolina as well as a 1000-person capacity multi-use
area for concerts and special events. Hours
are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor
Day, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the off season, daily (excluding
Christmas Day). Located on US 158 on milepost
7 in Kill Devil Hills. Entrance fees are $3
per adult, valid for 7 days. Children 16 and under are
free. Annual Park Passes are $10 per person. Free
Golden Age, Golden Access or National Park
Pass. Interpretive tours available upon request.

| Informative and entertaining
for the entire family, this outdoor drama commemorates
the first English attempt at colonization and the
disappearance of the colonists. The show is located only 3 miles from the Manteo waterfront
and Roanoke Island Festival Park and begins at sunset nightly
(excluding Sunday) from early June to mid-August. Tickets range
from $4 (Fridays and Saturdays are Kid's Night) to
$20. Backstage tours are available upon request with advance notice.
Facilities include a gift shop, restrooms and free

Earth mounds at the site where Sir Walter
Raleigh's explorers established settlements
in 1585 and in 1587. Birthplace of Virginia
Dare, the first child born of English parents
in America before the fateful colony's mysterious
disappearance. Located on Hwy 62/264 on the
North end of Roanoke Island. Open daily 9 a.m.
to 8 p.m. June through August, and September through
May 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free admission. Facilities

| Originally constructed in 1874 for the United States
Life Saving Service, then converted to a boathouse
when the existing complex was built in 1911. Depictions
of daring rescues, exhibits and living history through
beach apparatus drills conducted Thursdays at 2 p.m.
from mid-June through late August. Located in Rodanthe
on Hatteras Island on NC 12. Open Tuesday, Thursday
and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning Memorial
Day. Off season hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends, weather

A non-profit educational foundation documenting
the artifacts, culture and achievements of
Hatteras Island's earliest Native inhabitants.
Located on NC 12 in the village of Frisco.
Open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Monday
by appointment only. Admission is $2 per person,
$5 per family, $1.50 for seniors. Guided tours
