Where to Find the Best Kiteboarding & Windsurfing in OBX

1. Kitty Hawk Kites

If you’re searching for one of the best Outer Banks kiteboarding adventures, Kitty Hawk Kites is your go-to rental company. With more than a handful of locations along the North Carolina coast, including one on Manteo, they offer a reliable and trusted kiteboarding school. You can learn all of the important basics before showing off your skills at one of the fantastic local beaches.

2. Kite Club Hatteras

Kite Club Hatteras is about an hour’s drive south of Manteo in the town of Avon, but their kiteboarding lessons are fantastic for beginners. These classes take place in a private stretch of shallow water in Pamlico Sound, so you don’t have to worry about avoiding any boats, jet skis, kayakers, or swimmers. You must complete all three of their three-hour classes before becoming comfortable with independent kiteboarding.

The Best Outer Banks Kiteboarding Spots

Manteo

The wide waterfront of downtown Manteo makes it the perfect spot for kiteboarding in the Outer Banks. Head past all of the shops and restaurants to the sound front public parking area to avoid kayaks, boats, and docks. This is a fantastic launching point for you to cruise around Roanoke Sound! Make sure you use caution when entering and exiting near the harbor area.

Jockey’s Ridge State Park

Jockey’s Ridge State Park is one of the most beautiful locations in all of the Outer Banks. It’s also an excellent spot for launching your kiteboard. There is a separate waterfront parking lot, so you can easily access the drop point for an exciting endeavor through Albemarle Sound. Just keep in mind that the park is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. (depending on the time of year), so you’ll need to plan your Outer Banks kiteboarding experience according to their hours.

Windmill Point

Windmill Point, now called Harvey Soundside Park, is a mile or so south of Jockey’s Ridge State Park, and it’s a discreet place to enjoy kiteboarding in the Outer Banks. You can weave through the Penguin Islands before shooting out through the Roanoke and Albemarle Sounds.
