More Exciting History in the OBX

Fort Raleigh National Historic Site

Next door to The Lost Colony play is Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. This beautifully wooded area is home to the basis of the production. Here you can explore the preserved earthen remains of Sir Walter Raleigh’s English settlement, marking the spot of the first English ‘colony’ in America.

Roanoke Island Festival Park

Adults and kids will love exploring the fun and exciting history at Roanoke Island Festival Park. You’ll find several attractions, including a representational ship from the 1585 English voyage to the island, a constructed American Indian town, and a mock English settlement site! There’s also a large outdoor space for concerts and events.

Wright Brothers National Memorial

If you’re searching for some fascinating American history that’s a little more current, head over to Kill Devil Hills to check out Wright Brothers National Memorial. Orville and Wilbur Wright’s dream of flying came true in 1903 on this windy hill near Kitty Hawk after years of trials and experimentation. You can see the reconstructed 1903 camp buildings and the Wright Brothers National Memorial visitor center, where exhibits highlighting the achievement of flight are on display.
