Why Nags Head Beaches are Some of the Best

05/13/2022 | by Joseph Mitchell | Outer Banks Outdoor Recreation

Visitors come from up and down the East Coast to vacation in North Carolina’s Outer Banks. While there are plenty of attractions and activities on the main strand, you can’t beat Nags Head beaches. The 12-mile stretch of sandy shore is the ultimate beach trip destination, especially during the summer.

The Best of Nags Head Beaches

It’s no secret that the Nags Head beaches are some of the most sought-after vacation spots along North Carolina’s Outer Banks. There are over 30 public access points to the 12 miles of pristine seashore where you and your family can frolic in the ocean, build sand castles on the beach, and relax with your favorite book or drink under an umbrella. Visitors can also bring their dogs as long as they leash them. Nags Head Beaches are the perfect retreat for those looking to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of life and take in the natural beauty of the famous North Carolina coast!

Other Nags Head Attractions

Jockey’s Ridge State Park

The Nags Head Beach isn’t the only fun thing to do in the area! Jockey’s Ridge State Park is home to some of the most famous sand dunes in the entire country! There is also a visitors center and a 360-foot boardwalk that allows you to explore the largest dunes on the East Coast! You can even try your luck at sandboarding with a permit!

Jennette’s Pier

Jennette’s Pier is the oldest fishing pier in the Outer Banks, offering views of the Nags Head beaches and the Atlantic Ocean! Spend a morning or afternoon fishing here before hitting the vast stretches of sand for some sunbathing or swimming!

Bodie Island Lighthouse

The Bodie Island Lighthouse is one of the most famous lighthouses along the North Carolina coast (and there are plenty of famous ones here)! The design looks similar to the classic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse design, except the black stripes create a straight ring around the stem instead of candy cane stripes. The area around the lighthouse is gorgeous, so bring your camera to take photos before and after you hike up the 214 stairs to the top!

Nags Head Restaurants

Fish Heads Bar & Grill

After a day of soaking up the sun, grab a bite to eat at Fish Heads Bar & Grill. This favorite restaurant sits at the base of a pier on Nags Head Beach, boasting fantastic views of the ocean, especially during sunset. The fare here is relatively casual but enjoyable nonetheless. You’ll find everything from burgers to grilled tuna bites on the menu. Finish off your meal with a delicious slice of Key Lime Pie. Fish Heads is also a great place to enjoy a beer on a warm summer evening. They also serve breakfast if you’re craving something on the beach in the morning.

Outer Banks Brewing Station

Head to the Outer Banks Brewing Station after spending a day at the beautiful Nags Head beaches. Sample their local brews as you take in live nightly entertainment at this Nags Head hotspot. It sits in between Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head, so that you can explore both places along NC’s Outer Banks!
